Hydroseeding slopes

Hydroseeding for Slopes and Embankments

Hydroseeding slopes is one of the few reliable ways to get grass growing on steep ground. The mulch and tackifier bind the seed to the soil, so it stays put through wind and winter rain while it germinates. It's the same approach used on road batters, sized for your yard.

Hydroseed slurry being sprayed onto a slope

Why turf and hand seeding struggle on a slope

Turf rolls are heavy and can slide on steep ground before they root. Seed spread by hand blows off loose sand in the afternoon sea breeze, or washes to the bottom with the first winter storm.

Hydroseed is sprayed as a wet slurry that sticks where it lands.

How we spray steep ground

  • A heavier mulch rate for extra protection
  • Tackifier to bind seed and mulch to the surface
  • Erosion matting on very steep or exposed sections
  • Spraying from the bottom or top of the slope, so there's no foot traffic on the seedbed

Blends that hold the soil

On slopes we lean towards deep-rooted, runner-forming grasses such as couch and kikuyu, or native mixes where the area won't be mowed. Roots are what keep the soil in place long term.

Where we see slopes in Perth

Sloping blocks are common in the hills suburbs and along the coast, where homes are built into old dunes. We also spray cut-and-fill batters on new estates, driveway embankments, retaining wall backfill and farm dam walls.

FAQ

Questions about hydroseeding for Slopes and Embankments

Short answers to what people ask us most.

How steep can you hydroseed?

Most slopes you can safely walk on can be sprayed directly. Very steep batters get erosion matting as well.

What if it rains after spraying?

Normal rain helps germination. A very heavy storm in the first couple of weeks can wash patches on steep ground, which is why matting is used on the steepest sections.

Do I need a retaining wall instead?

Not usually. Grass roots stabilise most garden slopes. We'll tell you if the slope is too steep for grass alone.
