Growing a lawn on Alkimos sand

Alkimos is one of the fastest-growing suburbs in the northern coastal corridor, with estates such as Alkimos Beach and Shorehaven filling the dunes between the freeway and the ocean.

The soil is mostly pale coastal sand over limestone. It drains fast, holds little water or nutrient, and often repels water when it's dry.

We work in soil improver and a wetting agent so water soaks in, then spray a blend suited to full sun and salt air.

What we recommend for Alkimos yards

• A warm-season couch blend for full-sun yards
• Soil improver and wetting agent on new-estate sand
• Tackifier and a heavier mulch rate on exposed lots
• A spring or early-autumn spray date, before or after the hottest weeks

Holding seed in the sea breeze

Alkimos sits right on the coast, and most afternoons the sea breeze picks up across open lots. Dry seed and bare sand don't stay put in that. Our mix includes a tackifier that glues the seed and mulch to the surface, and on the most exposed blocks we use a heavier mulch rate.
