Spring: September to November

Spring is the most popular time to hydroseed in Perth. Soil temperatures climb, days get longer, and couch and kikuyu germinate quickly once the soil is warm.

The lawn then has the whole summer growing season ahead of it. The catch is that a lawn sprayed late in November meets its first heatwave while it's still young, so earlier in spring is better.

Early autumn: March and April

Early autumn is the other good window. The soil still holds summer warmth, the worst heat has passed, and the first rains often arrive in April or May.

Warm-season grass slows down as the weather cools, so spray early enough for the lawn to establish before winter.

Summer and winter

Summer works if you can water consistently. Hot easterly mornings and strong afternoon sea breezes can dry out new seed within hours, so we add extra mulch and tackifier to protect it.

Winter is slow. Warm-season grass barely grows when the soil is cold, and heavy winter rain can wash bare ground. If you need cover in winter, hydromulch can hold the surface until spring.

What the numbers say

The Bureau of Meteorology's long-term averages for Perth show the pattern: hot, dry summers with little rain from December to March, and most of the year's rain falling from May to August.
